While my first two years at UCSB were informative, it wasn’t until my junior year that I truly found my niche. In Fall 2013 I took part in the UCDC program where I interned with InterAction, a large non-profit coalition that advocates for humanitarian aid in Washington, D.C. In Spring 2014, I spent five months studying abroad at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa. Thereafter, I spent two months volunteering in Kimuka, Kenya, a small, rural Maasai village. Upon returning to UCSB, I was accepted into the Sarah Miller McCune Internship in Public Service Program, through which I currently serve as a Research and Analysis Intern with Direct Relief. I also work as the UCDC Peer Advisor and as the Community Outreach Coordinator for Community Affairs Board, UCSB’s largest community service organization.
What I will miss the most about UCSB:
One of the many things you take for granted as an undergrad is all of the amazing lectures the university organizes. Once you leave, suddenly you have to pay to hear individuals talk about cutting-edge research or controversial topics. Attending these lectures, engaging in thoughtful conversations, and listening to world experts discuss some of the most pressing issues of our time is definitely what I’ll miss most.
After Graduation:
In the immediate future I will be traveling throughout the Mediterranean for six weeks. Thereafter, I have no definite plans. Within the next three years I plan on pursuing an advanced degree in International Development and/or International Law.
